The Book of Revelation often intimidates readers with its vivid imagery and symbolic language. Yet its primary purpose is not to confuse but to comfort—revealing that Jesus Christ is victorious and His people will share in His triumph.

The Title and Theme

"Revelation" means "unveiling" or "disclosure." This is not primarily about revealing future events but revealing a Person:

"The Revelation of Jesus Christ" — Revelation 1:1

Jesus is at the center of everything in this book.

Structure of Revelation

The Things Which Thou Hast Seen (Chapter 1)

John's vision of the glorified Christ

The Things Which Are (Chapters 2-3)

Letters to the seven churches

The Things Which Shall Be Hereafter (Chapters 4-22)

Visions of heaven, judgment, and the new creation

The Seven Churches (Chapters 2-3)

Jesus addresses seven real churches in Asia Minor, each with specific commendations and warnings:

  1. Ephesus - Lost their first love
  2. Smyrna - Faithful under persecution
  3. Pergamos - Compromising with false teaching
  4. Thyatira - Tolerating immorality
  5. Sardis - Spiritually dead
  6. Philadelphia - Faithful with little strength
  7. Laodicea - Lukewarm and self-satisfied

Key Symbols

  • Lamb - Jesus Christ, the sacrificed Savior
  • Lion - Jesus Christ, the conquering King
  • Dragon - Satan
  • Beasts - Antichrist and false prophet
  • Babylon - The world system opposed to God
  • New Jerusalem - The eternal home of God's people

The Central Message

Despite all the dramatic visions of judgment, the book's message is simple:

Jesus wins.

No matter how dark things appear, believers can take heart. The Lamb who was slain is worthy to receive power, riches, wisdom, strength, honor, glory, and blessing.

The Glorious Ending

Revelation concludes with the new heaven and new earth:

  • No more death, sorrow, or pain
  • God dwelling with His people
  • The river of life and tree of life
  • Eternal light from God's presence

"He which testifieth these things saith, Surely I come quickly. Amen. Even so, come, Lord Jesus." — Revelation 22:20
