In the Bible, names carry profound significance. God's various names reveal different aspects of His character, helping us know Him more deeply.

The Primary Names

Elohim (God)

"In the beginning God [Elohim] created the heaven and the earth." — Genesis 1:1

This plural name emphasizes God's power, majesty, and creative might. It hints at the Trinity.

YHWH (LORD/Jehovah)

"I AM THAT I AM" — Exodus 3:14

The most sacred name, revealed to Moses at the burning bush. It speaks of God's self-existence, eternal nature, and covenant faithfulness. In most English Bibles, it appears as "LORD" (all capitals).

Adonai (Lord)

This title emphasizes God's lordship and authority. He is Master and Ruler of all.

Compound Names with YHWH

Jehovah-Jireh (The LORD Will Provide)

"And Abraham called the name of that place Jehovah-jireh." — Genesis 22:14

When God provided a ram to replace Isaac, Abraham named the place to commemorate God's provision.

Jehovah-Rapha (The LORD Who Heals)

"For I am the LORD that healeth thee." — Exodus 15:26

God is the source of all healing—physical, emotional, and spiritual.

Jehovah-Nissi (The LORD Our Banner)

"And Moses built an altar, and called the name of it Jehovah-nissi." — Exodus 17:15

After victory over Amalek, Moses celebrated God as their rallying point and source of victory.

Jehovah-Shalom (The LORD Is Peace)

"Then Gideon built an altar there unto the LORD, and called it Jehovah-shalom." — Judges 6:24

God is the source of true peace.

Jehovah-Rohi (The LORD My Shepherd)

"The LORD is my shepherd; I shall not want." — Psalm 23:1

God tenderly cares for His people as a shepherd tends his flock.

Jehovah-Tsidkenu (The LORD Our Righteousness)

"And this is his name whereby he shall be called, THE LORD OUR RIGHTEOUSNESS." — Jeremiah 23:6

Christ becomes our righteousness before God.

Jehovah-Shammah (The LORD Is There)

"And the name of the city from that day shall be, The LORD is there." — Ezekiel 48:35

God promises His presence among His people forever.

Knowing God Through His Names

Each name invites us to trust God in specific ways:

  • Need provision? Call on Jehovah-Jireh
  • Need healing? Call on Jehovah-Rapha
  • Need peace? Call on Jehovah-Shalom
  • Need guidance? Call on Jehovah-Rohi

"The name of the LORD is a strong tower: the righteous runneth into it, and is safe." — Proverbs 18:10
